Baby, Look No Further

from Speak When I'm Spoken To by Roy Møller

about

A bedroom demo that I recorded on a four-track with Sporting Hero a few years prior to our joint album collaboration, The Singing's Getting Better. Like many of my songs, this one seems to be craving those chilly mornings where the fumes from a newly lit cigarette seem positive and life-affirming, everything appears to be in its rightful place till slowly the bracing briskness dissipates as the growing of the grey light unveils all my usual imperfections and underachievement.

I'd always filled exercise books with songs, Tippexing them, updating and discarding them (and a thousand bedroom demo). I remember going back to a mature student place one time & strumming a guitar that was resting against an armchair, to be told by one of his pals that I couldn't play guitar for toffee etc etc and as a callow youth resenting it and wondering whether this was true. "Just Glasgow humour, son," the guy assured me, compounding the damage.

lyrics

My highlight was standing on the skylight glass
Above some smoky dive
All the students skippin’ classes
Breathin’ fumes and gases just to feel alive
In a city of sulphurous vapours
Betting slips and cigarette papers
I see the same things you do and I see you

My highlight would be you seein’ my light
And knockin’ on my door, I’d come alive
Like schoolgirls used to play elastic
My favourite plastic 45
In this city of sulphurous vapours,
Betting slips and fish’n’chip papers
I see the same things you do and I see you

I see you setting up your easel, all you see is greyness
Peepin’ through a keyhole to see the rich and famous
But if you ever wonder if somebody could love you

Baby look no further, I’m on the floor above you
I see the same things you do and I see you.
I see you
